FAMILY SERVICES
Rose Hill strongly believes that addiction is a family disease. We try very hard to engage each adolescent's family or support system in the recovery process. The Family Department offers orientation, education and continuing counseling to all of the adolescents and their families. During this last year 168 families took part in the family program.
The goal of the Family Department is to engage more families. With adolescents the family is a crucial element of the recovery process. The greater the involvement the greater the positive outcome.
Family services include:
- Orientation and education for family members
- On-going support by phone
- Family sessions twice monthly, or as needed
- Negotiation of a post-treatment behavior contract
- Referrals, as needed, for on-going family counseling
- Coordination of family services with your referral source
- In case of a family crisis, death of a family member or friend of your child, please call and inform staff first, before you tell your child by phone or in person. Experience has shown us that your child will do much better with bad news if staff is informed and prepared to help.
- We strongly encourage parents to meet with their child and a family counselor around the 7th week of treatment to discuss re-entry into the family and the community.
- Parents are required to complete two orientation sessions. The first session is scheduled prior to the visit. The second session is scheduled prior to your second visit. Please contact your family counselor.
EDUCATION
Within the first few days at Rose Hill you will meet with many staff members; one of them will be the teacher. You will sit down with the teacher to discuss your educational past, as well as to design a personalized education plan for your stay at Rose Hill. This plan is generally developed around one of three options:
1. Homework coordinated with your home school
2. GED preparation
3. College/vocational preparation
Residents at Rose Hill are involved in two hours of education each weekday. During this time you will be working on one of the above listed options. You will also learn concepts and theories designed to help you get in touch with the "sober" way to live a happy, healthy, more fulfilling life.
RECREATION
As a member of the Rose Hill community you are asked to participate in several activities. These activities will help you understand the dimensions of the disease using hands-on problem solving techniques.
The recreation department at Rose Hill functions with two primary goals for the residents. First, we show you how to have fun and enjoy life without the use of chemicals. Second, we give you ideas for the use of your free time when you are no longer using drugs.
Some of the physical activities in which you may be involved include hiking, biking, horseback riding, weight lifting, swimming, bowling, fishing, and skiing, as well as some of the traditional sports. You may also have the opportunity to exercise the mind with trips to museums and art galleries, or a once in a lifetime trip to the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center to enjoy the bobsled, luge or speed skating clinics.
MEDICAL
The Medical Department at RoseHill continues to be extremely busy. Each adolescent admitted to the program has a complete history and physical examination, TB screening and lab work completed. These tests, along with the routine medical issues that arise on an individual basis, keep the Medical Department busy. They work extremely hard to offer the adolescents an opportunity to improve their physical and emotional health.
AFTERCARE
The Aftercare Department works with each adolescent during their stay in treatment. Relapse prevention is a major focus of this program. Each adolescent leaves treatment with an aftercare contract which was developed to assist them in early recovery. The adolescent and their family also develop a behavioral contract to assist both the adolescent and their family in setting up realistic goals and expectations for early recovery, the transition home, and in the community. Each adolescent is encouraged to utilize the 1-800 number at Rose Hill to keep in contact following their discharge from the program. Knowing that they can call any time and someone will be there to share their good times and bad is a valuable resource that gets a lot of use.
